Desert Star — Obverse

Posted by Kristie on June 6, 2006 under Kristie's Finished Quilts | Comments are off for this article

Desert Star was a gift for my Mom’s 60th birthday — which is today, 06-06-06. About a year ago, she told me she wanted a quilted wall-hanging, so I thought this would be a good way to mark her birthday.

To celebrate my Mom, I sent fabric squares out to her friends and family and asked them to sign them. I encouraged people to personalize the squares somehow, by writing a message, including a quotation, drawing a picture, or something like that. MS, who lives near my Mom, was particularly helpful, gathering signatures from several of their other friends — my Dad had to sneak over to her place to sign his square.

The response was fantastic. The signature squares are variously thoughtful, funny, interesting and lovely.

There were 14 signature squares, from 24 different people (many couples jointly signed one square). I added a couple of “informational” squares — one is the quilt label, and the other is about my mom’s birthday and this project — for 16 total. I stitched these together and used them as the center of the quilt back.

I’m really pleased with how this turned out. It looks neat, and it makes the quilt special. It was also fun for me to get to know my mom’s friends a little bit, and she really loved it. Thanks to everyone who sent me a square!

It’s done!

The quilt I made for my brother and his fiance is (almost) done. Here it is:

I say it is almost done because I still need to finish embroidering the label. But the quilting and binding are all finished, and it’s been through the washer — so I think that’s enough to call it done!

I’ll post a bit more later about the binding and the back.

My first quilt

I finished my first quilt top in December 2003 and finished the quilting in the first week of January 2004. I think it’s pretty cute. It is 26×26 inches, and it hangs over the fireplace in my living room.

I call it “Tulips Out of Season” because the colors make me think of Fall rather than Spring. I made it from a kit I bought at JoAnn’s. If I ever use a kit again, I won’t rely so much on the instructions — I kept thinking I should do things differently, but decided to blindly follow the directions instead, and I’m not completely satisfied with the result.
