Last week I happened to be in my car when Science Friday on NPR came on over the radio. It was very interesting. And just as with the Kojo Nnamdi show, whenever I hear an interesting radio program I lament that I just do not see how to build much audio-listening time into my day. Well, there is that damn exercise bike in the basement. Ahem. Moving on…
Last week’s Science Friday program included an interview with a scientist talking about a recent look at the famous Framingham study data that was seeking evidence of human evolution. Their fundamental criteria, it seems, was reproductive productivity (how many children a woman had), but they said they accounted for numerous factors in examining that. (I’m probably mischaracterizing this all to hell–but you get the general idea.)
Anyway, what I liked about the story was that it was just so refreshing to listen to an expert speak reasonably carefully about science in an accessible fashion. Setting aside the giggles over their result that women are evolving to be shorter and chubbier (the interviewee explains that result, by the way), it was pretty fascinating stuff.
NPR’s Science Friday has a twitter feed: @scifri.
In other science-y news, @pourmecoffee in my Twitter stream pointed to this absolutely amazing composite photograph of the Milky Way. So coooooool. Stars upon stars upon stars.
